The Tecnobim project was developed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and SEMS (Services for Sustainable Mobility), through a financial contribution from the regional government of Lombardy.
The objective of the research work has been the realization of a vehicle bimodal prototype with front-wheel drive.
This project has been developed to demonstrate the possibility to apply to existing vehicles with internal combustion engine (with particular reference to city-cars) a kit of hybridization to transform them into innovative vehicles "bimodal". The modified vehicles are so equipped by the internal combustion engine original (already present in the original set-up vehicles) and an electric engine obtained using a kit of hybridization. The ultimate goal of this project was therefore to demonstrate that the integration of innovative hybridization kit in existing vehicles can actually participate in the reduction of emissions of gases and particulate matter from cars, especially in urban areas. This transformation is a very interesting and economical solution when the mission of the vehicle includes urban areas where traffic is limited. Finally, the application can be extended to different vehicles of the same class.
The prototype has participated on June 14, 2009 to 2th Trofeo Aria Nuova, at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza (Monza's motordrome), winning the first prize for the lower emissions of unburned hydrocarbons [1]
The constructive solution found allowed the filing of a patent, currently valid in Europe and Brazil [2].
The interest shown by the industry in the results of this research led to the birth of a Spinoff of the Politecnico di Milano.
