The photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) uses an excimer laser to change the shape of the corneal surface. This will change the refractive characteristics of the eye, thus correcting problems related to myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia. The excimer laser uses a process of photochemical ablation that removes, with a high degree of precision, a layer of the corneal tissue.

The study focused on the strategy of ablation that can be done in sequence from the center of the cornea to the outside or vice versa. The research has led to consider as the best strategy for this type of surgical operation that starts the ablation by the outermost diameter, ending at the center.
